Recent Trends in Tropical Geometry
International Conference
Start date: 16.08.2026
End date: 20.08.2026
Pre-event (Sofia): 16–17 August 2026 — ICMS / IMI–BAS, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
Main conference (Borovets / Yastrebets): 18–20 August 2026
What new structures emerge when algebraic varieties degenerate to piecewise-linear shadows?
How do tropical curves illuminate enumerative invariants and mirror symmetry?
Where does tropical geometry meet non-archimedean analysis, symplectic topology, and the geometry of moduli?
Recent Trends in Tropical Geometry is a research conference bringing together a focused group of mathematicians working in tropical geometry and its interactions with algebraic geometry, enumerative geometry, mirror symmetry, non-archimedean geometry, and related areas.
The meeting takes place in Bulgaria in August 2026. It begins with a short pre-event in Sofia — a panoramic prelude — followed by the main research conference in the mountain setting of Borovets / Yastrebets. The format is intended to encourage mathematical exchange in a compact setting, with research talks, panoramic lectures, and ample time for discussion.
The programme is organised around two complementary parts:
- Tropical Geometry — A Panoramic Prelude (Sofia, 16–17 August): broad introductory lectures establishing a common conceptual background.
- Recent Trends in Tropical Geometry (Borovets / Yastrebets, 18–20 August): a focused research workshop on recent developments and emerging questions.
Scientific scope includes algebraic geometry; enumerative geometry; mirror symmetry; non-archimedean geometry; symplectic and complex geometry; tropical curves, moduli, and degenerations; and piecewise-linear and polyhedral methods in geometry. The aim is not to cover the entire field systematically, but to create a lively research environment around recent progress and open directions.
This conference is organised with the support of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and ICMS Sofia.
We warmly invite the tropical geometry community to join us in Bulgaria for these days of mathematics, conversation, and mountain air.
Attendance and Registration
Participation is by invitation only and limited to approximately 20 participants in total, including the organisers. A small number of additional places may be available for scholars and collaborators upon request.
For invited participants, the organisers expect to provide local accommodation in Sofia and Borovets/Yastrebets, together with organised transfer between the two locations. Further logistical details will be announced in due course.

Programme
Tropical Geometry — A Panoramic Prelude (Sofia, 16–17 August 2026)
Panoramic Lectures
The pre-event consists of broad, panoramic lectures introducing the main ideas, motivations, and current directions in tropical geometry. The aim is to establish a common conceptual background before the main conference begins.
Tentative panoramic lecturers:
- Grigory Mikhalkin — Université de Genève
- Ilia Itenberg — Sorbonne Université, IMJ–PRG
- Ernesto Lupercio — CINVESTAV & ICMS Sofia
Venue: ICMS Sofia / Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Detailed schedule of panoramic lectures, titles, and abstracts will be announced once finalised.
