IMI-BAS Launches the Atanasoff Memorial Lecture Series Celebrating John Vincent Atanasoff

On November 10, 2025, the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences will host the Atanasoff Memorial Day event - a new initiative of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the International Center for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS-Sofia) at the IMI-BAS. The organizers' ambition is to hold the Atanasoff Memorial Lecture Series program every year, thus commemorating the memory of John Vincent Atanasoff (1903–1995) - a computer pioneer, inventor of a model of an electronic digital computer and renowned as the "Bulgarian father of the electronic computer". It aims to celebrate the intersection of mathematics, computation, and the sciences of complexity — the very domains that unite topology, geometry, and machine learning in the 21st century.

A Year of Collaboration and Discovery in the Theory of Atoms Group

On August 7, 2025, the Conference Celebrating the Consortium IMSAC was officially opened at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (IMI–BAS) in Sofia. The event honors the long-standing collaboration among leading mathematical institutes across the USA, Latin America, Asia, and Europe, united in the Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of the Americas Consortium (IMSAC). At the opening, Prof. Julian Revalski, Director of the International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia (ICMS-Sofia), greeted the participants and emphasized the importance of international cooperation in advancing contemporary mathematics. Prof. Peter Boyvalenkov, Director of IMI-BAS, welcomed the guests to the institute and wished them a fruitful and inspiring conference. The opening of the conference also sets the tone for a vibrant month of mathematical activity inBulgaria and coincides with an important milestone — the end of the first year of the activities of the research group Theory of Atoms, led by Prof. Ludmil Katzarkov.

Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe

The mission of the initiative Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe is to promote the role of female mathematicians.

The mission will be achieved through series of annual conferences with the main goal to celebrate women in Mathematics, to disseminate new results and create new long-term collaborations among scientists in South-Eastern Europe. We hope Women in Mathematics of South-Eastern Europe will attract the attention of young researchers and researchers from less-favoured countries.

The inaugural conference of the initiative Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe took place in Dec 2020. A special distinguished guest of the inaugural conference was prof. Mina Teicher from the Department of Mathematics and Gonda Brain Research Center, Bar-Ilan University, Israel. Prof Teicher is also Director of Emmy Noether Institute for Mathematics.

The Annual Meeting of Young Bulgarian Mathematicians

This meeting has as its main objective bringing together young Bulgarian mathematicians working all over the world.

We envision two main outcomes:

  • enriching relations between young mathematicians working in Bulgaria and the Bulgarian mathematical diaspora;
  • enhancing the professional development of young Bulgarian mathematicians by presenting new opportunities using the national and European scientific programmes.

The inaugural event of the series was held May 19-20 2021 and commemorated the brightest Bulgarian holiday the Day of Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture and the Slavоnic Alphabet May 24.
