Abstract:
C*-algebras associated to groups and topological spaces encode representations of these objects on Hilbert spaces. Gelfand duality allows us to completely recover a topological space from its C*-algebra, but for groups this is not generally possible. Groupoids and their C*-algebras generalise this for both groups and topological spaces, and in some circumstances the groupoid can be reconstructed from C*-algebraic information. Further, it becomes possible to describe some *-homomorphisms between groupoid C*-algebras as arising from underlying groupoid information.
